New York
New York is a city in the northeastern United States, at the southern tip of New York State. It is also called New York City to distinguish it from New York State. New York is the most populous city in the United States and one of the world's most populous metropolises. The world's largest metropolis, New York has a major impact on many areas, including commerce, finance, media, arts, fashion, research, technology, education and entertainment. In addition, New York is an important city in international diplomacy and has the United Nations headquarters. New York Harbor is one of the largest natural harbors in the world. New York is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. These communities were independent of each other and were merged into New York in 1898. The population of New York is 8,244,910 as of 2011, spread over 305 square miles. New York is also one of the most densely populated cities in the United States.
