The WTO is the body responsible for overseeing the large number of agreements that define trade relations between member countries. The WTO has emerged to replace the general agreement on tariff and trade, which began in 1947, and aims to reduce or eliminate global trade barriers. This guarantees more smooth and free trade between countries. The headquarters of the World Trade Organization is located in Geneva, Switzerland. On May 13, 2005, Pascal Lamy was elected Secretary General. He received the post of Secretary General on September 1, 2005, from former Secretary General Suppachai Panetchakpak. As of March 2013, there are 159 Member States and most of them are developing countries. All Member States have an obligation to observe the "unconditional bestowal principle", which means that the privilege of a single Member State must also apply to all other Member States. In the late 1990s, the World Trade Organization became a major target for the anti-globalization movement.

세계무역기구 는 회원국들간의 무역 관계를 정의하는 많은 수의 협정을 관리 감독하기 위한 기구이다. 세계무역기구는 1947년 시작된 관세 및 무역에 관한 일반협정 체제를 대체하기 위해 등장했으며, 세계 무역 장벽을 감소시키거나 없애기 위한 목적을 가지고 있다. 이는 국가 간의 무역을 보다 부드럽고, 자유롭게 보장해 준다. 세계무역기구의 본부는 스위스 제네바에 위치해 있다. 2005년 5월 13일, 파스칼 라미가 사무총장으로 선출되었다. 그는 수파차이 파닛차팍 전 사무총장으로부터 2005년 9월 1일 사무총장의 직책을 건네받았다. 2013년 3월 현재 기준 159개의 회원국이 있으며, 대부분의 국가는 개발도상국이다. 모든 회원국은 "무조건 최혜국대우 공여원칙"을 지킬 것을 의무로 갖는데, 이는 하나의 회원국이 받는 특권이 모든 다른 국가에게도 적용되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 1990년대 후반, 세계무역기구는 반세계화 운동의 주요한 공격 대상이 됐다.
