The twelve epigraphs are the ancient Roman statute of law which laid the foundation of Roman law. The 12 th edition was the centerpiece of the Roman republican identity and the basis of the Roman tradition. The Roman students had to memorize the original text of the twelve tablets, which seemed to have been handed down verbally, and Levius asserted that the twelve tablets were the source of all judicial and public law, and Cicero said that it was the whole body of Roman law . 12표법은 로마법의 기초를 이룬 고대 로마의 성문법이다. 12표법은 로마 공화정 정체의 중심이자, 로마적 전통의 근간이었다. 로마의 학생들은 12표법의 원문을 암기해야 했다고 하는데, 이로 보아 구두로도 전승된 듯하며, 리비우스는 12표법이 모든 사법과 공법의 원천이었다고 주장했고, 키케로는 그것이 로마법 전체의 몸체였다고 말한 바 있다.
