Animal experiment
Animal testing refers to experiments or scientific procedures carried out on experimental animals for scientific purposes such as education, testing, research and production of biological products. It is estimated that approximately 500 million vertebrates are used as experimental animals worldwide every year. This is a figure excluding invertebrates. Most experimental animals are euthanized after the experiment. Experimental animals are usually kept in large quantities, but some are caught in the wild. Experiments have been extensively conducted in many places, including universities, hospitals, farms, pharmaceutical companies, cosmetics companies, and food companies. Animal experiments are used for xenotransplantation, drug response testing, and toxicology testing as well as genetic characterization, growth process, and behavioral monitoring. Those advocating animal experiments argue that the development of medicine in the twentieth century was possible because there were animal experiments.
