Sudan, short for Sudan, is a country in northeastern Africa. The national language means "the land of black people" in Arabic. It is the 15th largest country in the world by 2013. Ethiopia to the north, Central African Republic to the south-west, South Sudan to the south, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest to the north, Egypt to the northeast, Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east. The Nile River, the longest river in the world, flows east and west through Sudan. In 2011, the territory of Sudan was reduced by the separation and independence of the South Sudanese republic. It is also referred to as North Sudan because of the name of the separated independent state, and it is misunderstood as a divided nation. However, unlike the concept of East Germany - West Germany or South Korea - North Korea, South Sudan is an independent state whose national self is determined to be 'South Sudan'. Since the Sudanese government accepts the result of the referendum and peaceful independence, It does not fit.

수단 공화국, 약칭 수단은 아프리카 북동부에 있는 나라이다. 국명 수단은 아랍어로 "흑인들의 땅"을 뜻한다. 2013년 기준으로 세계에서 15번째로 넓은 나라이다. 북쪽에 이집트, 북동쪽에 홍해, 동쪽에 에리트레아와 에티오피아, 남서쪽에 중앙아프리카 공화국, 남쪽에 남수단, 서쪽에 차드와 북서쪽에 리비아를 접경하고 있다. 세계에서 가장 긴 강인 나일 강이 수단을 동쪽과 서쪽으로 가르며 흐른다. 2011년에 남수단 공화국이 분리독립함으로써 수단의 국토 면적은 감소하였다. 또한 분리된 독립국가의 이름으로 인해 북수단으로도 불리며 분단국가로 오해되기도 한다. 그러나 동독-서독이나 남한-북한의 개념과 달리 남수단은 국호 자체가 '남수단'으로 결정된 독립국가이며, 국민 투표 결과를 수단 정부가 수용하면서 평화적으로 독립했기 때문에 통일을 지향하는 분단국가의 개념에는 맞지 않는다.
