In economics, demand is an economic principle that represents the will and desire for a consumer to purchase a particular good or service. Basically, demand means the amount of goods or services desired by the buyer. Demand is the amount people want to buy under a specific price. The relationship between price and demand is called the law of demand. The term demand refers to the ability and willingness to consume a particular good at a given time. Economists use demand or demand curve graphs to describe demand. The usual demand curve shows a downward trend. Downward sloping shows the relationship between price and demand. Demand increases as prices fall. In principle, each consumer has a demand curve for all the goods he wants to buy. The individual demand curve can be said to be consistent with the marginal utility curve. Combining all the individual demand curves leads to a product demand curve. If there is no external effect, the market demand curve is consistent with the social utility curve.

경제학에서 수요란 소비자가 특정 재화나 서비스를 구매하기 위한 의지와 소망을 나타내는 경제원리이다. 기본적으로 수요란 구매자가 원하는 재화나 서비스의 양을 의미한다. 수요량이란 특정 가격 하에 사람들이 구매하고자 하는 양을 의미한다. 가격과 수요량의 관계를 수요의 법칙이라고 부른다. 수요라는 용어는 주어진 시간에 특정 재화를 소비하고자 하는 의사와 능력을 뜻한다. 경제학자들은 수요를 수요표 혹은 수요곡선 그래프를 이용하여 나타낸다. 보통 수요곡선은 우하향하는 모습을 보인다. 우하향하는 모습은 가격과 수요량의 관계를 보여주는데, 가격이 하락하면 수요량은 증가한다. 원칙적으로 각 소비자는 자신이 구매하고자 하는 모든 상품에 대해 수요곡선을 가진다. 개인의 수요곡선은 한계효용곡선과 일치한다고 말할 수 있다. 개인의 수요곡선을 모두 합하면 제품의 수요곡선이 도출된다. 만약 외부효과가 없다면 시장수요곡선은 사회효용곡선과 일치하게 된다.
