It is called "the integration of knowledge" and is an integrated academic theory to connect natural science and humanities. This idea is rooted in ancient Greek thought to understand the essential order of the universe through logical reflection. The two views of natural sciences and humanities were one in the Greek era, but gradually differentiated from the renaissance to the present. On the other hand, there is also a reductionism that divides the whole into parts. In 1840, William Howell first used the term "Consilience" in the book Inductive Science, which means incorporating knowledge by linking facts based on facts and fact-based theories in order to create a common ground of explanation. "The inductive conclusion of consuption can be obtained when the inductive conclusions obtained by conclusions through one field of facts are consistent with those obtained by another field.

통섭 은 "지식의 통합"이라고 부르기도 하며 자연과학과 인문학을 연결하고자 하는 통합 학문 이론이다. 이러한 생각은 우주의 본질적 질서를 논리적 성찰을 통해 이해하고자 하는 고대 그리스의 사상에 뿌리를 두고 있다. 자연과학과 인문학의 두 관점은 그리스시대에는 하나였으나, 르네상스 이후부터 점차 분화되어 현재에 이른다. 한편 통섭 이론의 연구 방향의 반대로, 전체를 각각의 부분으로 나누어 연구하는 환원주의도 있다. 1840년에 윌리엄 휘웰은 귀납적 과학이라는 책에서 "Consilience"란 말을 처음 사용했는데, 설명의 공통기반을 만들기 위해 분야를 가로지르는 사실들과 사실에 기반한 이론을 연결함으로써 지식을 통합하는 것을 뜻한다. "통섭의 귀납적 결론은 사실들로 이루어진 하나의 분야를 통한 결론에 의해 얻어진 귀납적 결론이 또 다른 분야에 의해 얻어진 결과와 일치할 때 얻을 수 있다.
