AIDS disebabkan oleh virus HIV yang menyerang dan memusnahkan daya ketahanan badan. Seseorang individu mendapat AIDS apabila virus HIV merosakkan sistem pertahanan tubuh badan. Sistem pertahanan badan yang tidak berfungsi menjadikan individu mudah dijangkiti bakteria dan virus-virus lain yang boleh menyebabkan sakit teruk.
