The BIOS, in the compilation, stands for Basic Input / Output System or Basic Integrated Operating System. The BIOS refers to the software code run by the computer when it starts up. The main function of the BIOS is to set up a machine so that other software programs stored in various mediums can be loaded, executed and taken over the computer. This process is known as boot. The BIOS can also be said as a coded program embedded into a chip that recognizes and controls motherboard and various computer devices. The term BIOS is specifically for personal computers. For other types of computers, the generic term boot monitor, boot loader or regular boot ROM is used. Although the BIOS name is an acronym, it can be a Greek word game βιος, which means life. The term first appears in the CP / M control system, describing the CP / M part loaded during the boot time which continues to interconnect with the hardware. Most versions of DOS have files named "IBMBIO.COM" or "IO.SYS" which are the BIOS disk BIOS.

Proses ini dikenali sebagai but. BIOS juga boleh dikatakan sebagai atur cara berkod yang dibenamkan ke dalam suatu cip yang mengenali dan mengawal papan ibu serta pelbagai peranti komputer. Istilah BIOS adalah khusus untuk komputer peribadi. Untuk jenis komputer lain, istilah generik boot monitor, boot loader atau boot ROM biasa digunakan. Walaupun nama BIOS itu adalah akronim, ia boleh menjadi permainan kata Greek βιος, yang bermaksud kehidupan. Istilah ini pertama kali muncul dalam sistem pengendalian CP/M, memerikan bahagian CP/M yang dimuat ketika masa but yang mengantara muka terus dengan perkakasan.
