Bugis people come from the Sulawesi islands in Indonesia, and now with a population of three million, inhabit almost all of South Sulawesi. The conquest of the Netherlands in the 17th century led to some of them moving and now mixed up with other tribes in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. They are merchants of spice and incense. As a general knowledge of British-controlled writing, Bugis ethnicity is well-known in the maritime field of the Malay Archipelago and in the economy. They are also known as brave warriors, feared pirates and successful traders. The main focus of this ethnic and cultural economy is the Ujung Pandang or known as Makassar. Bugis people are also Muslims.

Orang Bugis berasal dari kepulauan Sulawesi di Indonesia, dan kini dengan populasi seramai tiga juta, mendiami hampir kesemua kawasan di Sulawesi Selatan. Penaklukan Belanda pada kurun ke-17 menyebabkan sebahagian daripada mereka berpindah dan kini telah bercampur dengan suku lain di Sumatra, Kalimantan, Jawa, Semenanjung Malaysia, Sabah dan Sarawak. Mereka adalah pedagang rempah-rempah dan kemenyan. Sebagai pengetahuan am bertulis yang dikawal oleh british bahawasanya, etnik Bugis cukup terkenal di dalam bidang maritim di Kepulauan Melayu dan di dalam bidang ekonomi. Mereka juga terkenal sebagai pahlawan yang berani, lanun yang digeruni dan pedagang yang berjaya. Pusat tumpuan utama bagi kebudayaan dan ekonomi etnik ini adalah Ujung Pandang atau dikenali sebagai Makassar. Orang Bugis juga merupakan penganut agama Islam.
