Ghana

Ghana

Ghana, officially called the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa. It borders the Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Accra is the capital and largest city. Its population in 2005 was 21,029,853. Prior to colonial times, Ghana was occupied by some ancient kingdoms, including inland empire in Ashanti and various Fante countries along the coast. Trade with European nations flourished after contact with the Portuguese in the 15th century. England founded the Gold Coast, a colony, in 1874. Ghana was the first African black country to achieve independence from colonial rule. As soon as the country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, the name of Ghana was chosen as a reference to the Ghana Empire which was the origin of its ancient empire.
