The Mandailing people are defined as those who are Nasution, Lubis, Pulungan, Coal, Rangkuti, Daulae, Parinduri, Dalimunte, and Matondang only as the Supreme Court of the Folks Road Batavia 1926 and the divorced offspring of the nine clans. The Mandailing people are different from Batak people living in Mandailing or called Mandailing Batak consisting of clans such as Hasibuan, Harahap, and Siregar. They come from the interior of the west coast of Sumatra and South Tapanuli in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Their surroundings include mountains with lowland and lowland rice systems. Their search points include rubber, cinnamon, coffee and gold mining. They are famous for the tradition of writing and nine big drums called Gordang Sambilan. Although Mandailing is often associated with Batak, the average Mandailing people reject this response. this is due to religious differences, because the average people of Batak embrace the Christian religion while the Mandailing people mostly embrace Islam.
