Protestant is a Christian branch split from the Roman Catholic Church which is increasingly inclined to worldly in a series of movements that erupted in the 16th century in Europe known as the Reformation movement. Recent estimates estimate that Protestants worldwide have reached 800 million. The name of this religion comes from the English word "Protest" which means opposition. It refers to a group of Prince and Imperial City who protested the "Diet of Speyer" 1529 to reverse its decision in 1526 and reinstate the "Edict of Worms" 1521. Protestan merupakan satu cabang Kristian yang berpecah daripada Gereja Roman Katolik yang semakin cenderung kepada keduniaan dalam satu siri gerakan yang tercetus pada kurun ke-16 di Eropah yang dikenali sebagai gerakan Reformasi. Anggaran terkini menganggar jumlah umat Protestan di seluruh dunia telah mencecah 800 juta orang. Nama agama ini berasal dari perkataan Inggeris "Protest" yang bermaksud membangkang. Keputusan utama dalam Diet pada 1526 ini ialah selagi Majlis Awam atau General Council belum berjumpa dan menyelesaikan isu-isu teologi yang dibangkitkan oleh Martin Luther, "Edict of Worms" tidak boleh dikuatkuasakan dan setiap Putera boleh membuat keputusan sama ada membenarkan atau tidak ajaran dan pemujaan cara Lutheran di wilayah mereka masing-masing berdasarkan prinsip Cuius regio, eius religio atau "Siapa yang memerintah, itulah agamanya". Namun atas desakan gereja Roman Katolik, keputusan ini telah ditarik balik.
