Indonesian Rupiah
Rupiah is an Indonesian currency unit with ISO 4217 IDR currency code. The word "rupiah" is derived from the word "rupee", Indian currency unit. Indonesia has used the Dutch guilder currency from 1610 to 1817. After 1817, the Dutch East Indies guilder's currency was introduced. The rupiah currency was first introduced during the Occupation of Japan during World War II. After the end of World War II, Java Bank introduced the Java rupiah currency instead. The currency of guilder nica and several currencies of the guerrilla group were also rampant at that time. On 2 November 1949, four years after independence, Indonesia set the Rupiah as its new national currency. Riau Islands and West Irian have their own rupiah variants but their usage was disbanded in 1964 in Riau and 1971 in West Irian. The Asian economic crisis in 1998 caused the rupiah to fall by 35% and led to the collapse of Suharto's government. The rupiah is a currency that can be freely converted but traded with penalty due to high inflation rate.
