Ab Urbe Condita

Ab Urbe Condita

Ab Urbe Condita or Anno Urbis Conditae - the Latin expression "from the founding of the city", which occurred, according to ancient calculations, April 21, 753 BC. This was one of the many methods used by historians in Roman times to count years past when the Roman and Julian calendar was in use. This system, proposed by Warron, was replaced by Anno Diocletiani, who in turn was gradually supplanted by Anno Domini. Some modern historians say that the expression was not really used in the ancient world and that the use of it in this way appeared only recently. It occurs, for example, in Book XVIII, Chapter 107 "Natural History" of Pliny the Elder: Pistores Romae non fuere ad Persicum usque bellum annis ab Urbe condita super DLXXX, or in ks. XXXV chapter 22 of the same, where dating back to this system. Similarly, other authors, such as Pompey Festus, Julius Fronthus, Gellius, Titus Liwius, and Serius. The abbreviation "AVC" is certified by Valerius Probus. Występuje ono wszelako np. w księdze XVIII, rozdziale 107 „Historii Naturalnej” Pliniusza Starszego: Pistores Romae non fuere ad Persicum usque bellum annis ab Urbe condita super DLXXX, albo w ks. XXXV rozdziale 22 tegoż, gdzie znowu następuje datowanie tym systemem. Podobnie u innych autorów, jak Pompejusz Festus, Sekstus Juliusz Frontyn, Gelliusz, Tytus Liwiusz, Serwiusz. Skrót „AVC” poświadczony jest przez Waleriusza Probusa.
