Antinous

Antinous

Antinous - a Greek youth from Bithynia, who at the age of 12 was taken over by Hadrian's court. A few years later, the boy became a lover of the Emperor Hadrian, which was also approved by the Empress Vibia Sabina. Antinous drowned in the Nile in 130 AD. In 137 Hadrian founded the city - Antinoopolis, while Antinousa proclaimed heroes, raised huge temples, and held the Games in his honor. The most important temple was Mantinei in Arcadia. He made huge amounts of sculptures and portraits. The cult of Antinousa survived until the fall of Rome. The images of Antinous are depicted in sculpture, coins and gems as the ideal of youthful beauty. King Prussia Frederick the Great set Antinous statue under the windows of his cabinet at Sanssouci Palace. Kazał wykonywać ogromne ilości rzeźb i portretów. Kult Antinousa przetrwał do czasu upadku Rzymu.
