Azobenzene, diphenylodiazen - an organic compound, one of the aromatic azo compounds. At room temperature creates yellow crystals. It is used for the production of organic dyes. It belongs to photochromic compounds, occurs in two cis and trans isomeric forms. The trans isomer is more thermodynamically stable than the cis isomer. The two isomers can each interact thermally or photochemically. The transition from the more stable form of trans to the cis form takes place under the influence of a light wave of appropriate length. A change in conformation may occur after another wavelength of light or as a result of relaxation. Azobenzen, difenylodiazen – organiczny związek chemiczny, jeden z aromatycznych związków azowych. W temperaturze pokojowej tworzy żółte kryształy. Stosowany jest do produkcji barwników organicznych. Należy do związków fotochromowych, występuje w dwóch odmianach izomerycznych cis i trans. Izomer trans jest bardziej stabilny termodynamicznie od izomeru cis. Oba izomery mogą w siebie wzajemnie przechodzić termicznie lub fotochemicznie. Przejście od bardziej stabilnej formy trans do formy cis zachodzi pod wpływem fali świetlnej o odpowiedniej długości. Powrotna zmiana konformacji może zajść pod wpływem fali świetlnej o innej długości fali lub w wyniku relaksacji. Izomery cis i trans mają nie tylko różną strukturę, ale także odmienne własności fizyczne i chemiczne, wynikające z odmienności ich budowy.
