Biffa

Biff, blida - a machine throwing stone missiles used mainly in antiquity and the Middle Ages. It was probably thought in ancient Rome, but there is also a hypothesis that it originated in Byzantium. Medieval Europe was brought up during the crusade, and its activities in Byzantium were familiarized. In medieval Europe it was called blid. Biffa consisted of a base and a movable beam whose axis of rotation was located at 1/6 of its length, counting from the counterweight to the top. In Roman times, the counterweight was a large metal sphere, hung to a transversely attached slat to the throwing arm. In the Middle Ages, the boulders were counterweight, or the earth was placed in a wooden box attached to the shorter part of the arm. The variable weight of the counterweight allowed to maintain the same range of throwing with different weight of projectiles. Despite the use of moving counterweights, the accuracy of the biffy was quite enough to offset the accuracy of the counterbalance machine. Biffa, blida - machina miotająca kamienne pociski wykorzystywana głównie w starożytności i średniowieczu. W czasach rzymskich, przeciwwagę stanowiły duże metalowe kule, przywieszane do poprzecznie przymocowanej listwy do ramienia miotającego. W średniowieczu przeciwwagą były głazy, bądź ziemia umieszczana w drewnianej skrzyni, przymocowanej do krótszej części ramienia. Zmienny ciężar przeciwwagi pozwalał zachować taki sam zasięg miotania przy zastosowaniu różnej wagi pocisków. Mimo zastosowania ruchomej przeciwwagi, celność biffy ustępowała dość znacznie celności machin z przeciwwagą stałą.
