Dagon or Dagan - the chief god worshiped by the North Western Semitic peoples. He probably took care of farming and grain. He was worshiped throughout the Middle East, including Mesopotamia. The original meaning of the name is unknown. The word dagán in Hebrew and the Ugly word is "grain" and the word dag means "fish". According to one of the messages, Dagan was the inventor of the plow. The goddess of Dagana is attested in Mari from about 2500 BC, Ebli and Tuttul - from around 2300 BC, and in Ugarit - more than a thousand years later. Sargon of Agade and his grandson Naram-Suen attributed many of his conquests to the power of the god Dagana. At some point Dagan became the chief god of the Philistines, who probably recognized him as his chief god and ruler of the seas. In Ugarit, on the Mediterranean coast, Dagana was considered as the father of the Baal god and second in the hierarchy, after Elu, the supreme god. However, in the Ugric myths, he is not a leading figure. His role as the god of vegetation is about 1500 years p.n.e. Baal has largely taken over.

Pierwotne znaczenie imienia nie jest znane. Słowo dagán w języku hebrajskim i ugaryckim określa „ziarno” a słowo dag oznacza „rybę”. Według jednego z przekazów bóg Dagan był wynalazcą pługa. Kult boga Dagana poświadczony jest w Mari od około 2500 roku p.n.e., w Ebli i Tuttul – od około 2300 roku p.n.e., a w Ugarit – ponad tysiąc lat później. Sargon z Agade i jego wnuk Naram-Suen przypisywali wiele swych podbojów potędze boga Dagana. W jakimś momencie Dagan został głównym bogiem Filistynów, którzy prawdopodobnie uznawali go za swego głównego boga i władcę mórz. W Ugarit, na wybrzeżu Morza Śródziemnego, uważano Dagana za ojca boga Baala i za drugiego w hierarchii, po Elu – bogu najwyższym. Jednakże w mitach ugaryckich nie jest on postacią pierwszoplanową. Jego rolę boga wegetacji ok. 1500 roku p.n.e. w dużej mierze przejął Baal.
