Fakaofo

Fakaofo formerly Bowditch Island - a coral atoll in the Tokelau archipelago, belonging to the administrative territory of New Zealand's Tokelau. Atoll is at the same time an administrative unit of the same name. The Atoll has an area of ​​2.63 km² and surrounds an inner lagoon of approximately 45 km². Atoll consists of 26 larger islands and several dozen small islands, the most important of which are Te Lafu, Te Loto, Fenua Loa, Waves and Fenua Wave. Population in particular years: The main, out of only two settlements of atoll, is Fakaofo located on the island of Fenua Wave and inhabited by 265 people. The second settlement is located on the island of Waves. The atoll was discovered in 1841. In 1889 the United Kingdom established a protectorate over the atoll, including it in 1916 to the British colony of the Gilbert Islands and the lagoon. In 1925 the British transferred the administration of New Zealand. Between 1926 and 1948, the atoll was administered from Samoa. Currently it is still managed by New Zealand under the Tokelau Act of 1948. Until 1979 the claimant claims to the United States. Atol stanowi jednocześnie jednostkę administracyjną o takiej samej nazwie. Atol ma powierzchnię 2,63 km² i otacza wewnętrzną lagunę o powierzchni około 45 km². W skład atolu wchodzi 26 większych wysp i kilkadziesiąt drobnych wysepek, z których najważniejsze to: Te Lafu, Te Loto, Fenua Loa, Fale i Fenua Fala. Liczba ludności w poszczególnych latach: Główną, spośród jedynych dwóch osad atolu, jest Fakaofo położone na wyspie Fenua Fala i zamieszkane przez 265 osób. Druga osada położona jest na wyspie Fale. Atol został odkryty w 1841 roku. W 1889 Wielka Brytania ustanowiła protektorat nad atolem, włączając go w 1916 do brytyjskiej kolonii Wyspy Gilberta i Lagunowe. W 1925 Brytyjczycy przekazali administrację Nowej Zelandii. W latach 1926 – 1948 atol był zarządzany z Samoa Zachodniego. Obecnie jest nadal zarządzane przez Nową Zelandię na mocy Tokelau Act z 1948. Do 1979 do atolu roszczenia zgłaszały Stany Zjednoczone.
