Geoida - in geology the surface in every place is perpendicular to the vertical determined by the force of gravity. Geoida is a theoretical surface on which the Earth's gravitational potential is constant, equal to the potential of gravity on an average level of open seas and extended extensively below the surface of land. Because it contains a mirror of water in the seas and oceans, it is also referred to as Geoida Zerow. As an equipotential surface, the geoid at each point is perpendicular to the direction of gravity. The term was introduced in 1873 by the German mathematician Johann Benedict Listing. Because 71% of the Earth's surface is the ocean, the most representative approximation of the Earth's figure is geoida. Under the land, the geoid course is complicated due to a very varied spatial distribution of density, mainly in the surface layers of the earth's crust. Henri Poincaré has shown that it is impossible to express accurately the geoid equation in the land and ocean with one analytical function.

Geoida – w geologii powierzchnia w każdym miejscu prostopadła do pionu wyznaczonego przez siłę ciężkości. Geoida jest teoretyczną powierzchnią, na której potencjał siły ciężkości Ziemi jest stały, równy potencjałowi siły ciężkości na średnim poziomie mórz otwartych i przedłużoną umownie pod powierzchnią lądów. Ponieważ zawiera ona lustro wody w morzach i oceanach, dodatkowo określana jest jako Geoida Zerowa. Jako powierzchnia ekwipotencjalna, geoida w każdym swym punkcie jest prostopadła do kierunku siły ciężkości. Pojęcie wprowadził w 1873 roku niemiecki matematyk Johann Benedict Listing. Ponieważ 71% powierzchni Ziemi stanowią oceany, najbardziej reprezentatywne przybliżenie figury Ziemi stanowi geoida. Jednak pod lądami przebieg geoidy jest skomplikowany ze względu na bardzo urozmaicony rozkład przestrzenny gęstości, głównie w przypowierzchniowych warstwach skorupy ziemskiej. Henri Poincaré wykazał, że jest niemożliwe wyrażenie w sposób ścisły równania geoidy na obszarze lądów i oceanów jedną funkcją analityczną.
