gopura

Gopura

Gopura - gate in the form of a very tall, tapering upward tower that forms the entrance to the Dravidian Hindu temple. Gopura is characteristic primarily for southern India. Being the most visible element of the temple, the gurus are often mistaken for a much smaller proper shrine, and crowning it with a pyramid whose proper name is vimana. It has the shape of a stepped pyramid with a rectangular base whose subsequent floors are filled with rows of sculptures with mythological themes. Depending on the wealth of the temple, the sculptures can be painted in vivid colors. Gopura was placed in the walls surrounding the temple from four sides of the world. The number of gopur varies - smaller temples may not have them at all, or only one, four larger in each wall, oriented in the direction of the world. If the temple is surrounded by more than one wall, the gurus in the outer wall are the largest.
