homeostasis

Homeostaza

Homeostasis - the ability to maintain internal parameters in the system. This term usually refers to self-regulation of biological processes. Basically this is done to maintain the steady-state of intra- and extracellular fluids. The concept of homeostasis was introduced by Walter Cannon in 1939 on the basis of Claude Bernard's assumptions of 1857 on the stability of the internal environment. Homeostasis is a basic concept in physiology. This concept is also used in health psychology for the definition of adaptive mechanism.
