intron

Intron

Intron, a non-coding sequence - a portion of a gene sequence that does not encode a polypeptide sequence, but only splits encoding exons. Introns are commonly found in the genes of eukaryotic organisms, but in prokaryotes extremely rare, only in genes encoding tRNA and rRNA. They have stabilizing functions. Once DNA sequences have been transcribed into RNA, introns are cleaved with snRNA in the splicing process and matured matrix RNAs are used, which utilize ribosomes as a matrix for peptide and protein synthesis. This is not a "genetic rubbish" - as recent research indicates, introns can encode specific RNA that can regulate protein synthesis. Some introns also have ribozymes, so they cut themselves. The intron sequence provides a signal for the SR-protein regulating alternative splicing. Introns can be divided into four classes: nuclear introns, which are cleaved by the spliceosome, and self-mutating introns I, II, and III. In 1993, Phillip A. Sharp and Richard J. Roberts received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, among others. for the discovery of introns. Intron, sekwencja niekodująca − część sekwencji genu, która nie koduje sekwencji polipeptydu, a jedynie rozdziela kodujące eksony. Introny powszechnie występują w genach organizmów eukariotycznych, natomiast u prokariotów niezwykle rzadko, jedynie w genach kodujących tRNA i rRNA. W 1993 roku Phillip A. Sharp i Richard J. Roberts otrzymali nagrodę Nobla w dziedzinie fizjologii i medycyny m.in. za odkrycie intronów.
