Ithaca

Itaka

Ithaca is an island in the Ionian Sea, which lies to the west of the Peloponnese coast, and is part of the Ionian Islands archipelago. The remains of the Mycenaean culture were discovered on the island, perhaps as a trading center between the various Mediterranean state structures. From the II c. The island was ruled by Rome and later Byzantium. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, she passed under the control of the Normans, then for a short time to the Ottoman Empire, eventually becoming the property of Venice. Then in the 18th century the French were ruling it; In the years 1800-1807 it was part of the Republic of the Seven Islands, and in the 19th century it was ruled by the British. The island was liberated by Greece in 1864. In the 50s of the 20th century, the island was rebuilt after the earthquake. Today is a popular tourist destination. According to Homer, Itaka was the native island of Odysseus, who was her king.
