Kirkuk

Kirkuk is a city in northern Iraq, in Kurdistan, in the western foothills of the Kurdistan Mountains, the administrative center of At-Tamim muhafa. Approximately 755.7 thousand. residents. Kirkuk and its surrounding areas have been the subject of Kurdish territorial claims for decades. In the 1930s, the Arab population moved to the area inhabited by Kurds and Christians by the central authorities. The influx of Arabs was primarily related to the discovery of oil in Kirkuk in 1927 and the realization of the governmental irrigation project of the Hawkeye plain. Among the descendants of the first Arab settlers at that time to Kirkuk, the BAAS party recruited in the 1960s members of the pro-government, paramilitary groups known as the "Knights of Chalida ben Ualida", whose main occupation was terrorizing neighboring Kurdish villages. According to the census of 1957, Kurdish people constituted 48.3% of the population of Kirkuk, Arabs 28.2%, Turkmenistan 21.4%, Assyrians, Chaldeans and others. In the 60's. Kirkuk – miasto w północnym Iraku, w Kurdystanie, na zachodnim pogórzu Gór Kurdystańskich, ośrodek administracyjny muhafazy At-Tamim. Około 755,7 tys. mieszkańców. Miasto Kirkuk i otaczające je roponośne obszary stanowią od dziesięcioleci przedmiot kurdyjskich roszczeń terytorialnych. W latach 30. XX wieku rozpoczęła się stymulowana przez władze centralne migracja ludności arabskiej na zamieszkane przez Kurdów i chrześcijan tereny wokół miasta. Napływ Arabów związany był przede wszystkim z odkryciem ropy naftowej w Kirkuku w 1927 roku i realizacją rządowego projektu irygacji równiny Hawidża. Spośród potomków pierwszych arabskich osadników sprowadzonych w tamtym czasie do Kirkuku reżim partii BAAS rekrutował w latach 60. członków prorządowych, paramilitarnych grup zwanych „Rycerzami Chalida ben Ualida”, których głównych zajęciem było terroryzowanie okolicznych wsi kurdyjskich. Według spisu mieszkańców z 1957 roku, w którym posłużono się cezurą języka ojczystego, Kurdowie stanowili 48,3% mieszkańców regionu Kirkuku, Arabowie 28,2%, a Turkmeni 21,4%, resztę stanowili Asyryjczycy, Chaldejczycy i inni. W latach 60.
