Langskip

Langskip - the name of a medieval Norman ship. It comes from the term "long ship". The Langskips had a ratio of length to width of 7: 1, which, as for medieval conditions, meant very slender units. The Langskip had one mast, on which was raised a large quadrangular woolen sail. The ships were built on a skeleton consisting of a keel and frames made of wooden staves combined with a stitched joint. The wood for the construction of the units was split, not sawn, which made them very flexible and durable, and more resistant to soaking and rotting. The keel was made from one oak tree and the mast from one specially selected pine. These were the most important wooden items. Langskipy were seagoing vessels capable to meet even the rigors of ocean shipping, in contrast to the small, coastal Karfi. Due to the shape of the fuselage, the bow of the unit at high speed hovered over the water. The hulls, about 2.5 cm thick, were, for the time being, very thin, making the hull light.

Langskip – nazwa średniowiecznego okrętu Normanów. Pochodzi od określenia "długi okręt". Langskipy miały stosunek długości do szerokości sięgający 7:1, co, jak na średniowieczne warunki, oznaczało jednostki bardzo smukłe. Langskipy posiadały jeden maszt, na którym podnoszono duży, czworokątny, wełniany rejowy żagiel. Okręty budowano na szkielecie składającym się ze stępki i wręgów z drewnianych klepek łączonych na zakładkę łączonych przy użyciu kołków. Drewno do budowy jednostek było rozszczepiane, a nie piłowane, co czyniło je bardzo elastycznym i wytrzymałym oraz bardziej odpornym na nasiąkanie i gnicie. Stępkę wykonywano z jednego dębowego pnia, a maszt z jednej specjalnie dobranej sosny. Były to najważniejsze elementy drewniane jednostki. Langskipy były pełnomorskimi jednostkami mogącymi sprostać nawet ciężkim warunkom żeglugi oceanicznej, w przeciwieństwie do małych, przybrzeżnych karfi. Z racji kształtu kadłuba dziób jednostki przy dużej prędkości unosił się nad wodę. Deski kadłuba grubości ok. 2,5 cm były – jak na ówczesne warunki – bardzo cienkie, czyniąc kadłub lekkim.
