Lingua franca - in a narrow sense: the mixed language of the pidgin type, used in the Mediterranean, with reduced inflection and grammar, was based on verbal mostly from the French, Italian, Greek, Spanish and Arabic languages. Used in the Mediterranean ports in the 20th century, mainly in trade and diplomatic contacts, is now a dead language. The term lingua franca was originally used by the Arabs and represented any language derived from Latin, and in particular Italian. The Arabs used to refer to all the inhabitants of Western Europe as Frank. Over time, it has transformed into the name of the previously described language. Lingua franca is often mistakenly referred to as Creole. In fact, it was a mixed language, learned and used mainly in business and diplomatic contacts, but was not native to the community. As prof.
