Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola, located in the north-western part of the country on the Atlantic Ocean. Population: 2.7 million inhabitants, urban group 4.1 million inhabitants. In 2008 it was declared the most expensive city in the world. Luanda was founded by Portuguese sailor Paulo Diasa de Novais in 1573 under the name São Paulo de Loanda. At the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, Luanda was an important slave trade center in this part of Africa. Since 1975, after gaining independence, Angola Luanda became its capital. It is the largest economic and scientific-cultural center of the country. Food, textile, wood, cement, metal and machine industries are important. In Luanda there is a MAN bus assembly plant. It is a sea port and also has an international airport. The buildings of the city are characterized by buildings with a few floors, but in the center of the city more and more glass skyscrapers and hotels. Luanda has a university and museums. In the city is the historic 17th-century Portuguese fortress of Fortaleza de São Miguel.

W 2008 roku uznana za najdroższe miasto świata. Luanda została założona przez portugalskiego żeglarza Paulo Diasa de Novais w 1573 pod nazwą São Paulo de Loanda. Na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku Luanda była ważnym ośrodkiem handlu niewolnikami w tej części Afryki. Od 1975 po uzyskaniu niepodległości przez Angolę Luanda stała się jej stolicą. Jest największym ośrodkiem gospodarczym i naukowo-kulturalnym kraju. Istotne znaczenie ma przemysł spożywczy, włókienniczy, drzewny, cementowy, metalowy i maszynowy. W Luandzie znajduje się montownia autobusów MAN. Jest portem morskim, mieści się tu także międzynarodowy port lotniczy. Zabudowa miasta charakteryzuje się budynkami o kilkukondygnacyjnej strukturze, jednak w centrum miasta coraz częściej spotkać można szklane wieżowce i hotele. Luanda posiada uniwersytet oraz muzea. W mieście znajduje się zabytkowa XVII-wieczna portugalska forteca Fortaleza de São Miguel.
