Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte - Chilean dictator and general, military junta leader in Chile since 1973. From 1974 to 1990 he served as president. He came to power in the wake of a military coup, moving away from the authority of Salvador Allende and suspending the constitution. After a failed poll in 1988, he did not run in the resulting polls. In 1990 he passed the peace presidency of the 1989 free presidential election. In 1972, he became head of the Chilean army. On August 23, 1973, he was promoted to President of the Army by President Salvador Allende. On September 11, 1973, Pinochet carried out a coup in which he overthrew the Democratic Socialist government of Allende. From the beginning, the junta launched a brutal repression of the opposition.
