Sarafan

Sarafan - a type of long dress, often sleeveless, with a high waist, extended downwards, and usually front zipped or split. Sarafan was widespread in central and eastern Europe in the 17th-18th centuries. In Russia these dresses were worn by the peasants from the central and northern regions and by the Volga. The word "sarafan" comes from Persian. The earliest mention of sarafan as a type of clothing was recorded at 1376 in the Nikonian Summer. Over time, the cut and the manner of sewing the sarafans changed. In the fourteenth century, these dresses were worn by both the voivods and princes. The typical female sarafan was in the seventeenth century. In the villages based on the appearance of sarafan it was possible to determine the social status of a woman. For the tsar Peter I sarafan wore women from the lower social strata and representatives of the bourgeoisie, in the epoch of Catherine II - also noblemen. Sarafans consisted of several elements, which was why they were heavy. They were made of dyed sheep's wool, velvet, silk. Daily and Christmas sarafans were distinguished. Christmas ornaments. Wyróżniano sarafany powszednie i świąteczne. Świąteczne posiadały ozdoby.
