Sensor, a sensor - a physical or biological tool that is most often a component of a larger system, whose task is to capture signals from the surrounding environment, recognize and record them. In technical terms, a sensor is a device that provides information about the appearance of a particular stimulus, a threshold value or a recorded physical value. In this view, the sensor system consists of: ▪ a sensor, ▪ a transducer, ▪ a signal conditioning system, ▪ a telemetry system. Sensors that provide information in one of the electrical quantities, such as voltage, current, electrical resistance, are the most common sensors. This is because electrical current is a signal that is easily amplified, transmitted over long distances, further processed by digital techniques and computers, and retained. The above definition, previously modified, could equally well refer to organisms in the biological sense, especially the sense organs.

Czujnik, sensor – fizyczne bądź biologiczne narzędzie będące najczęściej elementem składowym większego układu, którego zadaniem jest wychwytywanie sygnałów z otaczającego środowiska, rozpoznawanie i rejestrowanie ich. W naukach technicznych czujnik to urządzenie dostarczające informacji o pojawieniu się określonego bodźca, przekroczeniu pewnej wartości progowej lub o wartości rejestrowanej wielkości fizycznej. W tym ujęciu układ czujnika składa się z: ▪ czujnika, ▪ przetwornika, ▪ układu kondycjonowania sygnału, ▪ układu telemetrycznego. Najczęściej spotykanymi czujnikami są czujniki dostarczające informację w jednej z wielkości elektrycznych, takich jak: napięcie, natężenie prądu, opór elektryczny. Jest to spowodowane tym, iż prąd elektryczny to sygnał, który łatwo wzmocnić, przesłać na duże odległości, poddać dalszemu przetwarzaniu przy użyciu technik cyfrowych i komputerów, a także zachować go. Powyższa definicja, uprzednio zmodyfikowana, mogłaby odnieść się równie dobrze do narządów w sensie biologicznym, szczególnie narządów zmysłów.
