Stromatolity

Stromatolites - rock formations composed of thin calcium carbonate laminates precipitated from seawater as a side effect of cyanobacteria. The carbonate rocks themselves are created in the places where cyanotic growth occurs. They are from the archaic to today, but especially in the proterozoic. They belong to the oldest traces of life on Earth. They are in the form of layers, insulated or interconnected domed growth domes and polygonal forms with bent laminates. The oldest stromatolites come from 3.4 to 3.5 billion years old, found in southern Africa and in Australia. They are found in sediments from 2.8 to 0.6 billion years old, although examples of later epochs are known, including numerous stromatolite formations from the late Triassic and the central jury found in Poland. The loss of this type of formation was gradual and was probably due to the activity of herbivores scraping algae from the surface of the mat forming stromatolites and preventing further development of cyanobacteria.

Stromatolity – formacje skalne złożone z cienkich lamin węglanu wapnia wytrąconego z wody morskiej jako efekt uboczny życia sinic. Mianem tym określane są również same skały węglanowe powstałe w miejscach wzrostu mat sinicowych. Występują od archaiku do dziś, ale szczególnie liczne były w proterozoiku. Należą do najstarszych śladów życia na Ziemi. Występują w postaci warstw, izolowanych lub połączonych ze sobą kopułowatych form wzrostowych oraz form wielokątnych o laminach ugiętych miseczkowato. Najstarsze stromatolity pochodzą sprzed 3,4–3,5 mld lat, znaleziono je w południowej Afryce oraz w Australii. Najszerzej spotyka się je w osadach sprzed 2,8–0,6 mld lat, choć znane są przykłady z późniejszych epok, w tym liczne formacje stromatolitowe z późnego triasu i środkowej jury znajdowane w Polsce. Zanik tego typu formacji był stopniowy i wynikał najprawdopodobniej z aktywności roślinożerców zdrapujących glony z powierzchni mat tworzących stromatolity i uniemożliwiających rozwój kolejnych warstw sinic.
