Wessex

Wessex

Wessex - one of seven Anglo-Saxon heptagons. Located on the southern tip of the United Kingdom, it bordered on the east with Sussex, north with Mercury, from the south west to Cornwall. The south of Wessex was surrounded by the sea. In the ninth century Wessex took over the leadership of the heptaras, owing largely to the invasions of the Vikings to the Anglo-Saxon states. During the reign of King Alfred the Great Wessex was not the only one conquered by the Danish invaders. By 1066, Wessex was the leading Anglo-Saxon kingdom, and as such the Kingdom of Wessex was identified with the Kingdom of England. It was not until 1066, after the conquest of William the Conqueror, that the power of Wessex was destroyed and the Kingdom of England became the official name of the state. Wessex - jedno z siedmiu państw heptarchii anglosaskiej.
