Arnold Winkelried from Stans - medieval fictional Swiss hero. In the Battle of Sempach the Swiss army with Habsburg troops of Austrian prince Leopold III Habsburg in 1386 Arnold Winkelried with the cry of the Road to Freedom! He set off for the fight by targeting his opponents. This action caused a breakthrough in the enemy's battle mechanics, so that the Swiss attack ended with defeating hostile forces. Winkelried is considered a symbol of sacrificing one's own life for the good of the homeland. Winkelried is considered a fictional character. This is due to the fact that his actions on the battlefield could not have affected his course and the long silence of the sources of the incident. Several decades after the battle the Swiss launched their own propaganda campaign, which was aimed at fighting the Austrian propaganda history of the battle. The first chronicle, which mentions an attack on enemy copies, was not created until 1476, and the described soldier is anonymous.

Przez swój czyn Winkelried uznawany jest za symbol poświęcenia własnego życia dla dobra ojczyzny. Winkelried jest uważany za postać fikcyjną. Wynika to z faktu, że jego czyn na polu bitwy nie mógł mieć wpływu na jej przebieg oraz z długiego milczenia źródeł na temat tego zdarzenia. Kilkadziesiąt lat po bitwie Szwajcarzy rozpoczęli własną kampanię propagandową, która była skierowana na zwalczanie austriackiej propagandowej historii tej bitwy.
