Ameboid

Ameboide

In biology, ameboid is called a group of protists, also known as Sarcodines, or the way of life, including feeding, reproduction and locomotion of several other groups of living beings. Amoebae can change their shape by the emission of pseudopods, used in locomotion and in catching food. The mode of locomotion of amoebae through pseudopods is termed "ameboid movement". This is also verified in cells of other organisms, such as the white blood cells of human blood. The amoebas measure about 0.5 millimeters in length and 0.2 millimeters in width, and can be observed only with the aid of a microscope. The genus that gives the name to this group of organisms is Amoeba. In addition to being used in locomotion, pseudopods are used to capture food. The amoebae are fed by ingestion of small protozoa and microscopic algae, and also of dead protoplasm. When they perceive the presence of food, they move toward it, encompassing it with the pseudopods. This process of food intake is called phagocytosis.
