API

Application Programming Interface API is a set of routines and standards established by software for the use of its functionality by applications that are not intended to be involved in the details of the software implementation but only to use its services. In general, the API is composed of a series of functions that are programmatically accessible, and that allow the use of less obvious software features to the traditional user. For example, an operating system has a large number of functions in the API, which allow the programmer to create windows, access files, encrypt data, and so on. But operating system APIs are often decoupled from more essential tasks such as manipulating memory blocks and accessing devices. These tasks are system core attributes and are rarely programmable. Another example is geometric drawing programs that have a specific API to automatically create entities according to user-defined patterns. More recently, the use of API has become widespread in plugins.

API, de Application Programming Interface é um conjunto de rotinas e padrões estabelecidos por um software para a utilização das suas funcionalidades por aplicativos que não pretendem envolver-se em detalhes da implementação do software, mas apenas usar seus serviços. De modo geral, a API é composta por uma série de funções acessíveis somente por programação, e que permitem utilizar características do software menos evidentes ao utilizador tradicional. Por exemplo, um sistema operacional possui uma grande quantidade de funções na API, que permitem ao programador criar janelas, acessar arquivos, criptografar dados etc. Mas as APIs dos sistemas operacionais costumam ser dissociadas de tarefas mais essenciais, como a manipulação de blocos de memória e acesso a dispositivos. Essas tarefas são atributos do núcleo de sistema e raramente são programáveis. Outro exemplo são programas de desenho geométrico que possuem uma API específica para criar automaticamente entidades de acordo com padrões definidos pelo utilizador. Mais recentemente, o uso de API tem se generalizado nos plugins.
