WHAT DOES APL MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

APL

APL is a programming language designed for mathematical operations. It was born of the work of Canadian mathematics teacher Kenneth Iverson. The APL language was formally defined and introduced by Iverson in his book A Programming Language of 1962. His original proposal was to produce a new mathematical notation, less subject to the ambiguities of conventional notation. According to Iverson, it was designed with the aim of being mathematically concise. In the 1960s, working on IBM together with Adin Falcoff, both produced the first version of APL, when a language interpreter became available. APL programs in general are always very small, though powerful. The language is prepared to handle large arrangements. For example, when APL writes A + B, if A and B are scalar, the answer will be as well. If A and B are vectors of 100 numbers, the answer will be as well. Same for arrays and even arrays-nd. In some versions of APL this n reaches 256 dimensions.

APL é uma linguagem de programação destinada a operações matemáticas. Ela nasceu do trabalho do professor de matemática canadense Kenneth Iverson. A linguagem APL foi formalmente definida e introduzida por Iverson em seu livro A Programming Language de 1962. Sua proposta original era a de produzir uma nova notação matemática, menos sujeita às ambigüidades da notação convencional. Segundo Iverson, foi projetada com o objetivo de ser matematicamente concisa. Na década de 1960, trabalhando na IBM em conjunto com Adin Falcoff, ambos produziram a primeira versão de APL, quando um interpretador da linguagem ficou disponível. Programas em APL em geral sempre são muito pequenos, embora poderosos. A linguagem está preparada para tratar arranjos de grandes dimensões. Por exemplo, quando em APL se escreve A+B, se A e B forem escalares, a resposta também o será. Se A e B são vetores de 100 números, a resposta também o será. Idem para matrizes e até arrays-nd. Em algumas versões de APL este n chega a 256 dimensões.
