Stroke, or stroke, commonly called a stroke, is characterized by the rapid loss of neurological function, due to clogging or rupturing of cerebral blood vessels. It is a sudden onset disease in which the patient may present with paralysis or difficulty of movement of the members of the same side of the body, difficulty in speech or articulation of words and sudden visual deficit of a part of the visual field. It can also evolve with coma and other signs. It is a medical emergency that can evolve with sequelae or death, with the rapid arrival in the hospital important for the therapeutic decision. In Brazil, the main cause of death is cardiovascular diseases, with stroke accounting for about one third of deaths due to vascular diseases, especially in the poorest social strata and among the elderly. It is the most common neurological problem in some parts of the world generating one of the highest costs for social security in countries.

O acidente vascular cerebral, ou acidente vascular encefálico, vulgarmente chamado de derrame cerebral, é caracterizado pela perda rápida de função neurológica, decorrente do entupimento ou rompimento de vasos sanguíneos cerebrais. É uma doença de início súbito na qual o paciente pode apresentar paralisação ou dificuldade de movimentação dos membros de um mesmo lado do corpo, dificuldade na fala ou articulação das palavras e déficit visual súbito de uma parte do campo visual. Pode ainda evoluir com coma e outros sinais. Trata-se de uma emergência médica que pode evoluir com sequelas ou morte, sendo a rápida chegada no hospital importante para a decisão terapêutica. No Brasil, a principal causa de morte são as doenças cardiovasculares, com o AVC representando cerca de 1/3 das mortes por doenças vasculares, principalmente em camadas sociais mais pobres e entre os mais idosos. É o problema neurológico mais comum em algumas partes do mundo gerando um dos mais elevados custos para as previdências sociais dos países.
