WHAT DOES BARBITAL MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

Veronal

Veronal is the commercial name of the first sedative and sedative of the barbiturate group. It was introduced in the early 20th century. Its discoverers were the Nobel Prizes Emil Fischer and the doctor Joseph von Mering. According to an anecdote the name is due to the fact that von Mering had taken a dose of the medication on a train and only woke up in the city of Verona. Veronal has hypnotic properties. Its high half-life in the body of more than 100 hours causes a prolonged action that paralyzes almost all bodily functions. Its prolonged application produces dependence. An overdose easily causes death. Due to these side effects it was replaced from the 60's of the twentieth century by other active principles such as benzodiazepines. It is currently no longer on the market. The Portuguese poet Florbela Espanca committed suicide through an overdose of this barbiturate. The chemical formula of veronal is C8H12N2O3. It is a colorless solid with a bitter taste. Ryūnosuke Akutagawa and Pierre Batcheff, both of whom used Veronal to commit suicide.
