Béla Bartók

Béla Bartók

Béla Viktor János Bartók de Szuhafő was a Hungarian composer, pianist and researcher of popular music in Central and Eastern Europe. Béla Bartók is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century. He was one of the founders of ethnomusicology and the study of anthropology and ethnography of music. Along with his friend, composer Zoltán Kodály, he toured towns in the interior of Hungary and Romania, where he collected and noted a large number of popular songs. During World War II, he decided to leave Hungary and emigrated to the United States. Bartók was disappointed in American life. There was little interest in his work, and his performances, where his second wife, Ditta Pásztory also participated, gave little financial return. Held financially by friends, he continued his career as a composer, being the sixth quartet one of his last compositions. In 1944 his health declines so much that Bartók happens to live in the hospital, under medical care. In spite of the somber situation, it composes also the 3 Concerto for Piano and a Concerto for Viola, that is incomplete, when dying to the 64 years, of leukemia.
