WHAT DOES BEGUINA MEAN IN PORTUGUESE?

Beguina

The beguines were beatas or grocers who practiced an ascetic life in common, similar to the monastic, most often in the so-called beguinaria in the area of present-day Belgium. After its founding, they spread, like the Begards, to the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The beguines dedicated themselves to the care of the sick and the poor, as well as to charitable and pious tasks, without being bound by cloistered nor public vows. At first, the beguines were tolerated and even encouraged because they were considered a religious movement of utility to the people. However, in 1311, the Council of Vienne condemned them because of the danger of heresy they represented. Later they subsisted in the form of asylums for poor spinsters. There are still some well-preserved begrims still in Brussels, Antwerp, Kortrijk and Ghent, as well as in the Netherlands.
