Camelot

Camelot

Camelot, or Camalot, is a legendary castle, seat of King Arthur's court in the medieval stories associated with the Matter of Britain. According to the legends, the castle contained a large hall, decorated with banners, in which there was a huge table, the Round Table, for the knights of the kingdom. The earliest stories about the Arthurian legends do not mention Camelot. Geoffrey of Monmouth in his Historia Regum Britanniae places the court of King Arthur in Caerleon in present-day Wales. The first book that mentions Camelot, and still in a fleeting way, is Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart, written between 1177 and 1181 by the French poet Chrétien de Troyes. The importance of Camelot increased greatly in the medieval Arthurian romances written later. In the legends, Camelot is located somewhere unspecified in Britain. From medieval times to the present day, some localities are said to be the place where Camelot was located. Since the castle is legendary these traditions lack scientific basis.
