The Celsius degree designates the temperature unit, named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, who was the first to propose it in 1742. The Celsius temperature scale has two important points, where the freezing point of the water corresponds to zero and the boiling point corresponds to the value 100, observed at a standard atmospheric pressure, also called normal pressure. Since there are one hundred graduations between these two reference points, the original term for this system was centigrade or hundredths. In 1948, the system name was officially modified for Celsius during the 9th General Conference of Weights and Measures, both in recognition of Celsius and to eliminate the confusion caused by the conflict of use of the SI centi prefixes. Therefore, it is not convenient to say "degree centigrade", but rather, "degree Celsius".

Como existem cem graduações entre esses dois pontos de referência, o termo original para este sistema foi centígrado ou centésimos. Em 1948, o nome do sistema foi oficialmente modificado para Celsius durante a 9ª Conferência Geral de Pesos e Medidas, tanto em reconhecimento a Celsius como para eliminar a confusão causada pelo conflito de uso do prefixos centi do SI.
