Episcopate

Episcopado

Episcopate, also known as Episcopal Government, is one of the administrative forms of the Church. It is a form of hierarchical organization, with the highest local authority exercised by a bishop. This structure is present in most Catholic Churches, Orthodox Churches and Episcopal Churches, including the Church of England. As Protestant denominations we can mention the Church of the Foursquare Gospel, in which the bishop rules regions, and the Methodist Church. Some other independent churches also have this structure. In this system the main ministers of the church are the bishops. Other ministers are elders and deacons. All of these are mentioned in the New Testament, although the terms pastor, bishop, and presbyter were originally thought to be synonymous. The government is centered on the figure of a leading bishop, who is responsible for the decisions and destinies of the church, but who has a group of subordinates, the Episcopal College, who are responsible for managing the system.
