Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located in the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It corresponds to a small peninsula, with a narrow land border to the north, it is limited, from the other sides, by the Mediterranean Sea, Straits of Gibraltar and Bay of Gibraltar, already in the Atlantic. Spain maintains the claim on the Rock, which is totally rejected by the gibraltin population. The name Gibraltar originates in the Arabic expression jabal al-Tariq which means "mountain of the Tárique". The mountain, a militarily strategic promontory at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, guards the strait that separates Africa from the European continent. The name is a tribute to the Muslim general Tárique who in the year 711 AD disembarked, beginning the conquest of the Visigothic kingdom. It was formerly called by the Phoenicians of Calpe, one of the Pillars of Hercules. Popularly, Gibraltar is called "Gib" or "The Rock".

Gibraltar é um território britânico ultramarino localizado no extremo sul da Península Ibérica. Corresponde a uma pequena península, com uma estreita fronteira terrestre a norte, é limitado, dos outros lados, pelo Mar Mediterrâneo, Estreito de Gibraltar e Baía de Gibraltar, já no Atlântico. A Espanha mantém a reivindicação sobre o Rochedo, o que é totalmente rejeitado pela população gibraltina . O nome Gibraltar origina-se na expressão árabe jabal al-Tariq que significa "montanha do Tárique". A montanha, um promontório militarmente estratégico na entrada do mar Mediterrâneo, guarnece o estreito oceânico que separa a África do continente europeu. O nome é uma homenagem ao general muçulmano Tárique que no ano de 711 d.C. aí desembarcou, iniciando a conquista do reino visigótico. Antes foi chamado pelos fenícios de Calpe, uma das Colunas de Hércules. Popularmente, Gibraltar é chamada de "Gib" ou "The Rock".
