Jihad

Jihad

Jiade or Jihad is an essential concept of the Islamic religion and means "commitment", "effort". It can be understood as a struggle, through personal will, to seek and conquer the perfect faith. Contrary to popular opinion, jihad does not mean "Holy War," the name given by Europeans to religious struggles in the Middle Ages through mimicry with contact with an Islam that, for 500 years before, had invaded half the Christian world. He who follows Jihad is known as Mujahid. The explanation of the two forms of Jihad is not present in the Qur'an but in the sayings of Muhammad: One, the "Greater Jihad," is described as a struggle of the individual with himself, for the mastery of the soul; and the other: the "Lesser Jihad," is described as an effort that Muslims make to bring the theory of Islam to other people. This division only appears, however, in the eleventh century in a book of al-Khatib al-Baghdadi which conveys that said of Muhammad.
