Leishmaniasis is a chronic, cutaneous or visceral disease caused by flagellate protozoa of the Leishmania genus of the Trypanosomatidae family. The calazar and the Bauru ulcer are forms of the disease. It is a zoonosis common to the dog and man. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of sand flies, which comprise the genus Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus. In Brazil there are currently seven species of Leishmania responsible for the human disease, and more than 200 species of sandflies involved in its transmission. It is a disease that has accompanied man since ancient times and has presented, in the last 20 years, an increase in the number of cases and an increase in its geographical occurrence, and is currently found in all Brazilian states, under different epidemiological profiles. It is estimated that, between 1985 and 2003, there were 523,975 autochthonous cases, most of them in the Northeast and Northern regions of Brazil. In Portugal there is mainly visceral leishmaniasis and some cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

A leishmaniose é uma doença crônica, de manifestação cutânea ou visceral, causada por protozoários flagelados do gênero Leishmania, da família dos Trypanosomatidae. O calazar e a úlcera de Bauru são formas da doença. É uma zoonose comum ao cão e ao homem. É transmitida ao homem pela picada de mosquitos flebotomíneos, que compreendem o gênero Lutzomyia e Phlebotomus. No Brasil existem atualmente 7 espécies de Leishmania responsáveis pela doença humana, e mais de 200 espécies de flebotomíneos implicados em sua transmissão. Trata-se de uma doença que acompanha o homem desde tempos remotos e que tem apresentado, nos últimos 20 anos, um aumento do número de casos e ampliação de sua ocorrência geográfica, sendo encontrada atualmente em todos os Estados brasileiros, sob diferentes perfis epidemiológicos. Estima-se que, entre 1985 e 2003, ocorreram 523.975 casos autóctones, a sua maior parte nas regiões Nordeste e Norte do Brasil. Em Portugal existe principalmente a leishmaniose visceral e alguns casos de leishmaniose cutânea.
