Leukorrhea is also called vaginitis or vulvovaginitis. They are changes characterized by an abnormal vaginal discharge, usually with increased volume, and may or may not have an unpleasant smell, irritation, itching or burning in the vagina or vulva, and the urge to urinate frequently. It is one of the most common gynecological problems and one of the most frequent causes of consultation with the gynecologist. It is normal to have vaginal discharge during the reproductive years. It comes from the secretion of the cervical glands and Bartholin's glands, the desquamation of the vaginal cells and the bacteria present in the vaginal flora. At this stage, the vagina is usually resistant to infections because its epithelium is very resistant and its medium is very acidic, inhibiting the excessive growth of the pathogens. Cervical mucus and menstrual flow are alkaline, as well as arousal, sexual intercourse and stress, which causes an increase in vaginal pH and may predispose to vaginitis. In childhood, non-specific vulvovaginitis caused by inadequate hygiene and the incorrect way of performing hygiene after bowel movements are common.
