Parsec

Parsec

Parsec is a unit of distance used in scientific works of astronomy to represent stellar distances. Equals the distance of an object whose average annual parallax is worth one second of arc. Because of the definition of the annual parallax, parsec can also be understood as the distance at which an observer should be placed to see an astronomical unit - equivalent to the distance from Earth to the Sun - under the angle of one second of arc. The word parsec came from the contraction of the words "paralax" and "second". The word first appeared in an astronomical article in 1913, in a footnote, in which Frank Dyson expressed concern about adopting a name to represent the distance of the stars from their parallaxes. Dyson suggests the name astron, but informs that Carl Charlier proposed the term syriometer and that Herbert Hall Turner suggested parsec, which eventually became the name of the unit. Since the parallax method is the fundamental technique for the calibration of astronomical distances, parsec is the most widely used distance unit in professional astronomical journals.
